Independent Study Courses

The objective of the Independent Study (IS) courses is to enable the transition of students from teacher-taught courses to self-study courses. Independent study coordinators and advisors help the MS students through this transition phase. The Independent Study courses enable the students to design a self-study program of research and to follow it with self-discipline. Students are expected to identify an area of their interest, develop a program of independent study, and periodically report on the progress. Students are advised to select an area for independent study that would help and support their thesis/research work. A judicious selection of independent study areas can substantially reduce the thesis time. Detailed guidelines are available with the office of graduate research.

MS Thesis

Thesis is a challenging research effort that adds value to the degree and distinguishes the MS graduates from ordinary course-based master degree holders. The thesis components brings this MS degree at par with international research-based MS degrees offered in USA and elsewhere. Thesis is different from any other academic activity that MS students may have undertaken as part of their undergraduate or course-based masters degree. The objective of thesis research work is to enable the MS student to join the international community of professional researchers working in the selected area. To ensure this participation, students are expected to be familiar with published research work, select a problem from the area of interest, define the problem and develop a solution in a scientific manner. A successful thesis equips the MS student with tools and techniques of research that makes the student confident that he can undertake any research assignment for solving a problem for which there is no known solution. Structured Thesis: An intensive structured thesis format for research has been designed to expedite the completion of a research thesis. This format establishes concrete deliverables with specific deadlines that provides the students and advisors a conceptual framework for monitoring the progress and achievement of goals. The structure has been developed as a result of analysis of reasons why thesis students in Pakistan often take an unreasonably long time to complete their research. Since the introduction of this structure students’ progress towards their thesis goals has been streamlined.
The structure defines the deliverables and their deadlines in accordance with the pre-announced dates in the academic calendar for semester monthly and final exams. The structured format allocates 9 credit hours of thesis across three courses of 3 credit hours each; (i) Research Proposal; (ii) Thesis Design (iii) Thesis Results and Defense. Courses are executed as per the standard KIET format.

Thesis Rules:

• The Thesis Committee that consists of the Primary Advisor and two other members supervises research work for thesis. Board of Advanced Studies and Research finalizes the Committee and may include experts from the industry to serve on the Thesis Committee.
• Thesis process is well defined and consists of a list of deliverable on which the progress of student is measured during each meeting with the primary advisor.
• Thesis has to be successfully defended in front of the Thesis Committee to complete the MS requirements.
• Full-time students can complete MS Thesis in a minimum of one regular semester. Depending upon the commitment, regularity and time-effort, a working student may complete the process in eight to ten months.
• However, a student may extend the research work (although it is not recommended) for up to a maximum of two years. In that case, the student must remain continuously enrolled in the Thesis course (3 credits) in each semester till the completion.
