Scholarship to attend Robot Operating System Workshop at Aachen Germany – August 2017

Mr. Zaid Pirwani was awarded scholarship to attend a 2 weeks training program on Robot Operating System (ROS) at Aachen University of Applied Science, Germany. 40+ people from 25+ countries attended this training program from 14th to 25th August, 2017. Zaid is currently enrolled in 2nd year of master’s degree at GSSE-PAF KIET. Zaid is also working as a research assistant on an ICTRnD funded project @ KIET regarding the development of Intelligent Mobile Robots for firefighting. This project is being supervised by Dr. Muhammad Bilal Kadri.

Dr. M. Bilal and his team are using ROS for their ICTRnD funded project. They have recently started indigenous development of ROS compatible hardware robots, named as MUSAFIR v2, the robots use Cameras (Mono and Stereo Vision), Thermal Camera, UltraSonic Sensors, LIDAR, 9-Axis IMU, GPS and Odometry. They were able to use ROS for the basic tasks of inter-system communication and sensor data visualization; however some of the more advanced topics were still to be learned, such as SLAM.

The ROS course at Aachen Germany covered topics from the basics to advanced algorithms of implementing localizing and mapping algorithms, along with path planning on a known/unknown maps and with different robot drive systems, differential and ackerman. Since Zaid already had some experience with ROS, the participation in the course was on par with the professionals and other students which took part in the course (40+ people from 25+ countries), half of the participants were professionals and/or PhD candidates working around the world on different Robotics related projects, autonomous cars, robots for inspection/cleaning/repairing of Wind Turbines and such.

EDCAS topped in IC Design Global Competition – Feb 2017:

Electronic Devices, Circuits and Systems (EDCAS) Research group from PAFKIET, Karachi topped a global and highly competitive IC design competition organized by XFAB, one of the main IC manufacturers located in Germany.

XFAB is among the top-10 global IC manufacturing facilities, working in collaboration with eFabless to provide cloud-based IC design services and to develop an entirely new type of online Integrated Circuit design ecosystem. Their business model strongly focuses on locating distributed IC design expertise and utilizing them remotely for the development of IPs with a proper intellectual property right sharing.

In their latest competition, 88 participants from all over the world contributed. The designed IP is that of an ultra-low-power Bandgap Reference Circuit. The design had to qualify almost 500 specifications including six-sigma manufacturing tolerances. Therefore, it necessitated for a high performance and robust design. It is a matter of pride for us that a Pakistani research group design qualified strongly when compared to other designs.

This is the second global IP design competition that EDCAS, KIET (http://edcas.gsse.kiet.edu.pk) has won in last 3 years, the previous one was with King Abdul Aziz City of Science and Technology, KSA in 2014. The design team of this project consisted of PhD faculty members, research associates and graduate students from PAFKIET. It highlights the fact that with proper research support from academic institutes and following an adequate model of HR development fully respecting the design-cycle and the recommended timelines, state-of-the-art research and development targets can be achieved from Pakistani academic institutes.
